May The Force be with us when George Lucas decides where his Cultural Art Museum will reside. Chicagoans hope Movie Magic moves in to stay.

As the First Chicagoan (having lived in “The City” since May of 1974) to boldly walk up to The  Microphone on that warm April Day in 2014 at The Chicago Cultural Center (on Washington & Randolph Streets)  we were asked for our Opinions as to where George Lucas’s Museum of Narrative Art should be built.

I had typed out my VO: Valued Opinion stating why the Building should be placed on the Quadrangle where our other Major Museums are located.  To me this was an incredible Gift given by one of the most Creative People of the 20TH & 21ST Centuries.  I was happy to find out later that this Area was initially picked for his Museum.

For the last Two (2) Years, I’ve kept tabs (as a News Person) to see The Ups & Downs now out-of-town  how this “GIFT” was thwarted by a Group of People (undoubtedly jealous of the Beneficiary).  So much so that they went over the Mayor’s Head in preventing The Lucas Museum from being built.

If this does not border on lunacy & crooked Politics, I have no idea what does.  Throughout that Period, I have read many of the Articles penned by Chicago Journalists who were not even knowledgeable enough to include the Twitter Handle of @LucasMuseum as I had in my Remarks and Comments.

NOW, as May and Ground-Breaking Season arrives in “The Windy City,” an entirely new Set of Events have been set forth as devastating NEWS which really cannot be explained away.

MY VO: Valued Opinion follows:

I am totally disappointed and shocked that Chicago may lose The Museum.  According to WGN, Protesters took to the Streets a few Days ago to illustrate their Frustration as well.  To reiterate, this was graciously given to Chicago by George Lucas and Mellody Hobson (Mr. & Mrs. Lucas) after a Series of Cities bid for:

The George Lucas Museum of Narrative Art.

THE BLUNT REALITY IS:  How often does a Gift Horse get dropped into your Lap?  Jobs – Added Tourism – getting inspired by this vast Collection are all flavors of what a Museum provides to a Community – not only a Community, but The 3RD largest City in the USA that could showcase the Museum as much as The Museum would spotlight Chicago.  But all of this has been axed and the HAPPINESS is totally gone.

Had this been my Decision, the Museum would have already been built and open by Mid-June.  The Powers that be are totally ignorant.  This Gift is comparable to winning an ART Lottery; for each Piece of ART marks a Decade of Popular Culture made famous & more famous by 1 of our noted Hollywood Visionaries/Filmmakers/Producers/Entrepreneurs, a Man whose Titles do not stop there.

There may be Three (3) at the most – TOP Pop Culture Icons living in the USA who have made our Culture what it is.  One of those Individuals is Mr. Lucas who's shared his Visions with us.  For Chicago – Third Largest City in the USA – and Home of Billions of Star War Fans live here  (throughout The Years)– and many more in The World visit Chicago as one of the Leading Global Cities to be BIG in Tourism - a Hub-of-Action there is no reason why The Museum should be shunned and shuttered.

The Friends of the Parks are not Friends of Chicago and what could make Chicago all the greater.

My Humble Opinion was that I felt The West Coast would soon be hit by an Earthquake. These Predictions often state that The Big One (Quake) is long overdue - making The News, a bit scary for any Builder – let alone to house a Collection of Mr. Lucas’ Intensity.

By the same token, The East Coast is now pummeled throughout The Year with a Variety of Storms (many are Hurricanes) that whip up The Coast, further north than ever before.

Environmentally-speaking, Chicago is the only Place safe to be in which a Museum of its wide Scope could call home.  As a 63 year old Woman, I remember a Time in the 1950s & 1960s when We had 4 distinct Seasons and the horrific Storms and Super-Cells now were non-existent.  That, too, I factor in as what is The Damage done to Planet Earth – but that's yet another Topics' Worth that I address in my other Writings/Books/Movie Scripts.

CHICAGO AS A COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME & EFFORT:  The Way I see this is that The Lucases have wasted Two (2) Years their Precious Time & Entrepreneurial Spirit in which their Gift to us – to Chicago – could be actively constructed…all up in Smoke – all wasted.

Imagine all of The Planning that has gone down The Tubes.  All of The Disappointment by not only Chicagoans like me, but Fans from all over the World who’d visit Chicago just because the Museum was here.

All of “The Madness” that's generated from The Writers alone (as myself) who know about Chicago's shoddy Reputation of not being able to SAVE many of its Youngest & most innocent of Residents from Gun and Gang Warefare – let alone being ignorant enough not to ACCEPT an Industry in – THE MUSEUM – in an Era when Jobs are going South to Mexico – as the Oreo Cookie Factory is headed.  If Chicago were a Person – that person would be labeled as a WIMP.

Where has all The Rationality gone?

“As a Student who graduated from Washington University in St Louis in Spring of 1974, I am clearly a Thinker who verifies the old Adage:

Don't stare a Gift Horse in the Eye;

go out and Ride that Horse till The Sun goes down; then make sure The Gift Horse is bedded down well for The Night so that Tomorrow is yet another Day to get back in the Saddle.”

This is a Gift from George & Mellody Lucas...not only a Statement on our A&E Art & Entertainment Worlds – where The Arts meets Technology – meeting The Script and Hollywood – it is a PEOPLE Principle that begs to ask the QUESTION:

What is the real Matter here?

Can The Mayor, Rahm Emanuel not VETO the Park District's Vote so that a smooth “Breaking of The Grounds” finally be instated?

This is a total SLAP IN THE FACE to The Lucases.

With Chicago's Bad Rap as being the Crime Center of The USA with innocent Men-Women-Children dying on The Streets of Englewood and The West & South Sides (predominantly), you would think that an Opportunity like this – that would provide JOBS would be immediately grabbed up and endorsed by Parents – The Adults who are The Decision-Makers here – who decided all WRONG.

What is The Outside World thinking of us?  Not much.  It's a Shame that Mrs. Lucas had to write the Response she earlier this Weekend and that this Dream was shattered.

A Gift that would be the Biggest Draw Chicago has received since The Bean arrived and was erected in February, 2004.  A Gift that already brought Billions of Dollars into The City from The Range of Flicks Mr. Lucas produced during The Course of his Lifetime-to-Date.

IN CLOSING:

After this Blog Entry closes (via the ***), my “happier”  Promotional Blog to clock its Progress that I began writing 2 years ago follows:

My Blog Entry of:

It's a sad Commentary and quite not understandable how this could happen.  That this Statement (Blog Entry) must be made.  The only thing I can say is that I am so sorry for the MASS IGNORANCE that My Town – Sweet Home Chicago – is displaying.  There's no rational way people-of-substance can grasp this inept Manner in which they have negated an Opportunity that thousands of other Cities (around the World) I would ascertain would relish with Open Arms – Wide Smiles and Gratitude.

1018 WORDS LATER:

I personally think that a Star Wars Village near O'Hare Airport (so that when People/Travelers fly in to The Area to make adjoining Stopovers or pass through) they can Rent-a-Car and spend a Delightful Day (Afternoon - Weekend) and then jet back out to their Destination.  After all, where one door shuts close, another one opens up, revealing a much better Opportunity. That's a Given.  Life exists outside of the narrow-minded Eyes of those who have axed such a Great Gift.  I'm truly sorry to hear this Gift and Opportunity is moving out of 606.

UPDATE CENTER:

Following is an eMail Letter penned to The Chicago Reader in response to an Article penned re: the George Lucas Museum coming to Chicago:

RE:  ASK/Chicago:  This is NOT your Great-Granddaddy’s Museum.  Response to your July 3, 2014 Cover Story.

Tuesday, July 8, 2014 - 11:13 AM CST

TO:

The Chicago Reader
350 North Orleans
Chicago, Illinois 60654 USA

Dear Mara, Deanna, Jake & Paul John:

There are Ways to be rude, but to be rude in Journalism and have that Vulgarity put into print is something that will follow that Reporter & her/his Publisher through Life.  Such is the ‘Cover Story’ penned by Deanna Isaacs in the July 3, 2014 Chicago Reader, entitled:

The Museum Menace.

This sad and misguided Commentary is one in which Deanna totally misses the Point and Relevance of why the George Lucas Narrative Arts Museum is coming to town.   Doing my research, I see that this is her second Article penned for The Chicago Reader, evidently as a continuing Series of Assault Columns on the George Lucas Museum and where it plans to break Ground.

San Francisco and Los Angeles bid on its Contents, yet Chicago won.   This Topic has been the Talk of the Town for months now.  Mr. Lucas’s Films, Creative Endeavors (as @Edutopia) have put the ‘Pop’ into Pop Culture.  He has created Jobs for millions of People throughout the Decades.  New Jobs will be created.  Culture has bloomed. Culture will be heightened in the years to come.   Entertainment News is being made, as it has been.  He has inspired.  People will continue to be inspired by then pursue their own Dreams.

Speaking on behalf of my Chicagoans (and I have lived here for 40 years now as o July 4, 2014), I consider us (as a Collective) to be very fortune and  very lucky.  Just think how San Franciscans and Los Angelinos feel.  Crushed and devastated.

My Guess is that Mellody Hobson, his Wife had a ‘Big Say’ in where she wanted their Collection to be housed; besides the fact that the State of California has a history and continuous array of Natural Disasters as:

Fires/Earthquake/Landslides/Mudslides

that occur on a regular basis so that it would totally warrant that a New Location be found for such a vast Collection of Artifacts, Memorabilia and Collectibles, stemming from the Career of one of the World’s Greatest Minds & Directors.

Let alone that Chicago is the third largest City in the USA; a place that is metropolitan, cosmopolitan and cultural in all perceived avenues.

HOWEVER:  I personally disagree on one very important Pointer and that is with where the Museum will be built. As the first Chicagoan to speak at the April 24, 2014 meeting at the Chicago Cultural Center, I stated that the George Lucas Cultural Arts’ Museum would be best suited to be constructed  in the Area of the Museum Triangle – to be in the GOOD COMPANY of the Field Museum, Adler Planetarium and Shedd Aquarium.  I was happy to see that my Selection was  the Mayor’s Tasks Force’s First Choice. However, it’s been diverted and taken further south to land that is ‘controversial.’

My new and improved Position is now:

How about the South End of Lincoln Park?

On our Lakefront.  Overlooking Lake Michigan.  Riparian Property.

As for Ms. Isaacs view on The Lucas Narrative Arts Museum (as it has now been renamed) to that of being:  a Vanity Project, she again mis-reads what this Transaction is all about.

Other Artists do and have done the same thing:  Ed Paschke now has an Art Center.  Donald Trump plasters his name wherever he find an empty building. Salvador Dali’s Museum in St. Petersburg is open for his fans to see breath-taking accounts of his Works.  Harry Potter is now a Disney Feature.

Amassing such a monumental Array of Memorabilia (numbering 500,000+ Paintings, Costumes, Props, etc.)  describes and immortalizes those earlier years that We were an active Part.  This variety of Movie Magic encompasses the  Pulse & Excitement that The Star Wars Dynasty created.

Had Messrs. Field, Shedd and Adler lived in our Age, I’m sure they’d have seriously thought of how to best preserve their Legacy as Mr. Lucas has chosen to do.  Taken this Day & Age where Branding and Marketing has been thoroughly rewritten, it’s safe to say and know that:

This is NOT your Great-Granddaddy’s Museum.

As I had stated:  There are Ways to be rude.  When presented with a Gift of this immense Caliber, that’s hardly  the proper Way to respond by letting your Petty Jealousies enter a Publication. Reporting the Facts & flavoring a Piece with Personal Opinions is a Waste of Time for your valued Readers and Subscribers.  Buying Stock in Bubble Wrap is what I’m seriously considering.

Thursday, June 12, 2014:  It is not over till 'The Fat Lady sings.'  Although there isn't one here, per se, The City of Los Angeles now wants Mr. Lucas' Museum to reside in their Territory - on their Turf, expressing an Opinion that made national/international news this morning.  This registers as an interesting Turn of Events as the Bidding Wars heats up for his Cultural Arts Museum.  Although I'm from Chicago who is also in the running, I'm hoping Wyoming will be the Winner since the State is beautiful and being out in Nature is an Art these Days; tranquil and reassuring as that is.  Kids deserve that. Kids of all ages.  However, with Los Angeles on the West Coast where Hollywood is, you got to admit between the Name: Lucas & Los Angeles, an Artist could have lots of Creative Fun via WordArt.  We shall see. From what it being tossed around, an Answer will be forthcoming by the End of the Summer.  Decisions.  Decisions.

Friday, May 30, 2014 - 2:45 PM CST:  I’ve had a Change of Mind. That’s allowable, especially so when another Idea pops into Brain that seems to be better and more suited than any other that you’ve – I’ve had.  Since it’s always about Location-Location-Location, I decided that perhaps Chicago &/or San Francisco is not the appropriate place to house George Lucas’s Arts & Culture Museum.  Via this Tweet my new Thought:

If the #GeorgeLucas Cultural Arts Museum were 2 set up in #Wyoming, land wld B cheaper; more of a Draw 4 that Scenic State. A serious Consideration.

A few other Possibilities or Changes I arrived at include:

1)     Divide up his Collection. The Norman Rockwells would go to (an) Art Institute of his Picking.

2)    The Film Items (Paraphernalia – Scripts, etc.) could be contained in another Museum. Therefore, 2 locations would share The Wealth of his vast Collections.

My Thought Process (interesting as those always are) of selecting another Locale not mentioned (i.e.:  between Chicago and/or San Francisco) is that I stayed up late and watched Late Night with David Letterman last night.  A first in a long time.  When I began thinking of him, I realized he had a home – resort or getaway in that State and I instantly thought:

“Why shouldn’t Mr. Lucas be housed on terrain like this?”

Therefore, what you’re reading is this Addition for May 30, 2014.  It’s amazing where the Imagination will take you.

ENTER: George Lucas and the Forces that be…

May 28, 2014:
SOURCE:  WTTW – Channel 11 – PBS TV: Chicago Tonight
He wants a Pier, he gets a Pier.
After watching the WTTW Channel 11 Chicago Tonight Segment on Tuesday, May 28, 2014, IT (whatever IT may be defined as) all boils down to:

LOCATION – LOCATION – LOCATION

The active Discussion of Real Estate can really get “riled” up when different Factions of City Government have their say. Input. Feedback. We all have our Valued Opinions.  Therefore, I am again airing my Thoughts here as a Writer/Lifestyle Conceptualist and Person who has now resided in Chicago for 40 years as of May-July, 2014.
Mr. Lucas is looking for a Site for his Cultural Arts Museum.  Both San Francisco and Chicago are in ‘The Running.’  From the 4-way Conversation of last evening, San Francisco is offering him a PP: Pier Presence which is rated as scenic and picturesque. What’s lovelier than Ocean Front Property?  Who really would not take that – even sight unScene – and unSeen.
However, Chicago does possess some extremely attractive Positives that are Negatives to all Californians.
Chicago has NO Earthquakes.
Chicago has NO Mudslides.
Chicago has NO Forest Fires.
Chicago has NO Droughts.
We also have no Hurricanes but I haven’t heard of any of these hitting the West Coast that I am aware. I may be wrong on that account. Mother Nature (sooner or later) is going to have her Way with the State of California. Signs of that are already evident. I am not a Harbinger of Bad Luck, Coincidence or Fate, but the Reality of Meteorological Life is that it is ‘bound’ to happen sooner or later.  Why take a Chance with one’s life and valued possessions.
The other Craw in the Batter (or Battle) for the where Mr. Lucas’ Museum will call its new home is that the City of Chicago wants it built on 2 parking lots between Soldiers Field & McCormick Place.  Personally, to me, that is too far south and not centrally located (enough) for Tourists, Visitors, North Siders and Suburbanites.  Accessibility needs to be taken into consideration.
My Original Plan that I explained in late April to the Mayor’s Task Force assigned to exploring this Opportunity via their Open Session Meeting at the Chicago Cultural Center was that:
The Lucas Cultural Arts Museum should be built in the Area of the Triangle where the Field Museum, The Shedd Aquarium and the Adler Planetarium are located.  This way, the Geometrics could become a Quadrangle.    A lovely Weekend (or Weekday) Outing could be enjoyed by being SO centrally located.  The Proximity of the Museums would drive further business to this area.
However, there might not be enough Land there.  I am not privy to what The Mayor’s  Task Force is thinking but I still stand by my Original Idea but have greatly improved upon it.
As I had stated upon Opening this Document:
He wants a Pier, he gets a Pier.
Right off the ‘Coast’ of the Adler Planetarium, a Stretch of Land can be constructed, laid or mounted in Lake Michigan.  Top Engineers can be recruited to ensure this Structure.  The Museum can be reached by a Bridge or Ferry Boat Ride or a long walk down The Pier in order to capture the Beauty of the Area. Chicago knows Piers.  Navy Pier (built in 1914 and opened to the Public in 1916 according to Wikipedia) shows We know how to build and maintain such a Structure.
Via this Alternative, Mr. Lucas gets a Pier - his own Property, riparian (at that) which reminds him of his Home in San Francisco and is totally unique in every Way possible minus the Natural Disasters that could unexpectedly happen.
This Project could be tentatively called:
LucaSpace®
which aptly fits his Star Wars Films’ Themes  and also gives a  Guest/Visitor the idea that it is Space – his Space with the Blending of the  Two (2) Words.  Furthermore, with the Input from his Wife, Chicago’s Very Own, Mellody Hobson, their Joint Venture in this Part of their Lives together could be aptly called:
Mellucas Designs®,
yet another Name/Word I created earlier today, May 28, 2014 at 6:03 AM while thinking of a better Way in which to secure The George Lucas Cultural Arts Museum and making everyone their happiest while further instilling ‘Sweet Home, Chicago’ as the Great Hub of Arts, Cultural, Science & Humanity that it is and continues to be.
Is a Lucas Movie Studio a Possibility for Chicago next?  If you don’t suggest, you’ll never know.
IN CLOSING:  Let’s hope this Alternative Reaches ‘The Forces that be…’  As my Mother always states:
“Half the FUN is in getting there…wherever ‘there’ may be.”
Let’s hope ‘there’ is ‘here’ in the Heartland.

UPDATE: Tuesday, May 20, 2014:

I am extremely pleased to hear via CBS/Chicago News this morning at 6:57 AM and again at 7:28 AM that the Civic Meeting I attended at Chicago's Cultural Center in late April to discuss where The George Lucas Cultural Arts Museum would be located (if he so chooses Chicago as its Home and Homebase) is the LOCATION that I suggested to the City and Crowd.  Arriving early, I was the FIRST IN LINE to talk and openly tell The Group there (about 100 of my Fellow Chicagoans) that the Best  & Hottest Choice would be The Triangle where the Field Museum - Shedd Aquarium and Adler's Planetarium - all meet.  While in attendance, City Officials stated it would be approximately a month until their Task Force decided which would be the better area (as Chicago does have many magnificent and prime locations in which to ‘land’ such an Institution).

Of course, I could NOT have been prouder since Tomorrow: Wednesday, May 21, 2014 marks my 40th Year I graduated from Washington University in St. Louis and then quickly moved to Chicago where I've been based since.  We shall see what happens next...

April 10, 2014

Dear Mr. & Mrs. George Lucas:

I am not an Architect, Builder or Real Estate Agent, but Instinct tells me that ‘Easy Accessibility’ is probably at the Top of your List for THE MUSEUM.

According to the Thursday, April 10, 2014 REDEYE ARTS Article on Page 30 that cites:

“Mr. Lucas initially wanted to nail down an agreement for his first choice:  a San Francisco bayside location on Crissy Field.”

Therefore, being within TMT: THE MUSEUM TRIANGLE – as that Area is popularly called -may be what you are looking for.  This Expanse is the most visited, clean, safe and well-traveled Area where our notable Museums are located.  Tens of thousands of People, Residents, Visitors, Students & Travelers visit every month. I firmly believe that:

THE LUCAS CULTURAL ARTS MUSEUM

would find this Area to be ideal:

Lakefront – Riparian Property

in the Heart of a thriving

&

bustling Metropolitan – Cosmopolitan City.

Easy to access.  In the HUB of the Third greatest and largest City in the USA; Home to where Mellody has two (2) of her successful Businesses (Ariel Investment and After School Matters).  The Midwestern Mentality and Personality is friendly with NO Pretenses.

Plus, I don’t mean to be a worry-wart, but I am.  With our increasingly  incredibly brutal and erratic Weather Conditions & Patterns (that is now called ‘Global Weirding by NY Times’ Thomas Friedman)  besides the fact that Fire/Floods/Mudslides/Earthquakes consistently plague California (and the West Coast) as well as the East Coast or any coastal region in our Country for that matter, I would honestly ‘oppt’ for a City where the ‘Forces of Nature’ are not that severe and unpredictable.  Cold & Potholes are (already) do-able.

Chicago has a spectacular Global Presence.   We do Movies and TV Shows, too.

Since our Incorporation on Saturday, March 4, 1837, we have consistently worked to become THE HUB between New York City and Los Angeles.  After all, when you’re passing through, you must stop-in and refuel (in more than one way).  As soon as you are in The Loop Area where fine Shopping excels; a quick taxi cab ride over to the Triangle of Museums on the Lakefront will offer an Experience like none other.  Add to that Magical Formula:

THE LUCAS CULTURAL ARTS MUSEUM

And the Quadrangle has found a permanent Home amongst Friends and “New Family.”

LET’s ADD IN SOME VISUALS:    To further elaborate:

What I mean by that is that if you look at those radiating & pulsating Graphs showing Airplanes’, Buses’ and Trains’ Routes running in and out of Chicago:

“all Roads and Jetstreams  lead to Chicago.”

May-June of this year marks my 40TH Year of residing/living/working/hanging-out here in Chicago.  I can’t think of a better Place for your Museum to ‘call home.’

These are just my Comments & Evaluation, Mr. & Mrs. George Lucas, as I wanted to share my Viewpoints as a Citizen of ‘Sweet Home Chicago.’

BrainStorming is one of my many Passions.
