ARTropolis 2008: 8 Galleries that set 'The Pace.'

The dep-ART-ure of ARTropolis 2008

DateLine: Monday, April 28, 2008 – 12 Noon CST

In just a few short hours, ARTropolis ™ will pass into the Annals of History (Art History, that is) as one of the greatest Art Exhibitions of all time, if not Thee Greatest. The reason I say that is:

INSPIRATION ASIDE: Even if a Person finds one piece of Art (of which there are thousands upon thousands of exquisite pieces ranging and racing the gamut of Tastes), the Time, Effort and Exercise expended at THE FAIR will leave an indelible mark in one’s psyche. Of course, scoffing husbands are muttering that ‘The only Mark’ will be left in their wallet(s), but for the most part, ART IS AN INVESTMENT. In Time. In Money. In Aesthetics. Three out of three is not bad odds.

TO CONTINUE AND REITERATE:

In just a few short hours, ARTropolis ™ will pass into the Annals of History (Art History, that is) as the greatest Art Exhibition of all time. The reason I say that is:

We (as a Society of People inclined to appreciate, enjoy and advance THE ARTS) are indeed lucky to be living at this relevant Point in Time when and where Reachability to such a Bounty of Great and Colossal Pieces is possible. Crossing Cultures and Time Zones, the Magnificence of the Art is mind-boggling.

WHICH LEADS US TO BELIEVE:

You really hate to see the Show pack up and leave as the Excitement and Variety is so captivating. I asked Kasey Madden, the Public Relations Director of The Merchandise Mart, as to why the 3 floors of space are not permanently rented to these Dealers, keeping the ambiance in tact. She explained that many of the Merchants are active Trade Shows Exhibitors and this is their Passion and do not wish to be confined to one space. Others are Gallery Owners found across the World who call other areas ‘home’ but wish to expand into the Midwest, the Heart of America. But for 5 Days in April, The Home of Art is found at ARTropolis, Chicago’s Very own.

KOOPERSMITH’s Note: Although ARTropolis closes today, so much information has been collected since April 24 (as I walked the miles of aisles throughout the Fair) that an ARTropolis BLOG-A-DAY could be penned (almost every Hour of each Day) about those

Artists,
Galleries and
Concepts

that challenge all Our Senses until THE NEXT SHOW returns.

AS THE PROMISE STANDS: More VO: Valued Opinions will be written in the months ahead until ARTropolis 2009 arrives. Stay tuned for those. If you wish to be placed on an ARTropolis eMail List, contact me at:

askoopersmith@hotmail.com

and I will be happy to oblige and let you know when those specific Signatures will be appearing.

More than a Pretty Picture. Marcus-McKennART moves The (Human) Spirit.

VIA: Very Important Artist
(...of the Day...)

Scene & Setting:
ARTropolis: 2008
Chicago, IL USA

Sunday, April 27, 2008 - 4:43 PM CST

Reading Barbara Marcus-McKenna's Press Literature will notify the reader that Words can capture what the Artist is visually messaging and creating. For those who can't meet an Artistic Great (which is most unlikely in this fast day and age when travel ‘moves’ the masses at incredible speeds in little time), the 'Art Encounter' lets them know more detail about the PIQ: Person(ality) in Question, known as the PIQ Factor.

One part of Barbara's highly detailed and info-packed Press Kit relayed a Story that (when paraphrased), all boils down to:

A rich couple bought an Artwork from her. Barbara and Husband, Daniel helped load it into the rich folks' Bentley. After the show (which are always tiring), while loading up their own vehicle (a moderately priced and sized van), a vagabond (evidently homeless gent with a true entrepreneurial flair) approached them, wanting to help them pack the truck, thus earning a few bucks for his days' needs. They took him up on his offer.

Emanating from the McKenna's Experiences here, two important Inter-Connections were made. Although different in outward appearance and means, all were intricately involved with and in each other in the Appreciation, Promotion and Furtherance of Art in their own way.

That's pretty cool.

That's the Way Art symbolically works....moving and transcending with each square inch and person it touches.

THE ENDING MORAL:

As Daniel & Barbara teamed up as Life Partners, so this Story follows the same energetic and spirited Path through their Days.

ARTropolis: The Real HOOK of The Art Industry exposed.

Saturday, April 26, 2008 - 3:34 PM Posting

Somebody left 3 of Ty Wadley's business cards laying on a table top near the Press Room. Tired, I grabbed a seat and picked one up. Ty, the Principal of FINE ART PEDESTALS in Cherry Valley, IL has the right idea. His Business is in Display as in Fine Art Pedestals. This set me to thinking of all (and I do mean ALL) the off-springs and off-shots People have created since Art became such a hot commodity. This had to have been some time after Neanderthal 'got Art' and artistic.

Honestly, if you think about it: What doesn't have to deal with Art? Life imitates Art. Art is lively. It's all relative. It's all the same, but then, it's not. Giving myself a 10 minute break, I decided to compose a Top 10 List of Accessories, Supplements, Adaptations and/or Auxiliary Items that enhance ART and make it what it is today.

Write-off the top of my head, beginning with Ty's Pedestals, those are:

1. Pedestals
2. Frames
3. Cameras (loaded with Film or Digitalized)
4. Adjectives (that include Paper, Pen, PCs and a few stray Ideas)
5. Galleries
6. Space (Floor - Wall - Ceiling)
7. Lighting
8. Crating
9. Hooks
10. Glass

OK: The 11th would have to be Canvas - but I thought of that while composing this ePage, not while relaxing...

After all, what else is there?

If you have more Suggestions, send them this way via:

askoopersmith@hotmail.com
or
Adrienne.Sioux.Koopersmith@gmail.com

There's bound to be more. But breaks are limited, you know.

MORAL OF THIS BLOG #37:

Because Somebody dis-CARD-ed 3 of Ty Wadley's business cards laying on a table top near the Press Room, TW (as in Ty Wadley, Principal of FINE ART PEDESTALS @ tywadley@fineartpedestals.com) received a Feature in my Blog here, forever immortalized. I took only one of those orphaned business cards; and left the 2 others behind. Maybe somebody else will pickup the Idea...and a few of Ty's Pedestals.

ARTropolis: 2008. Is it Photoshop or is it ART?

Inquiring Minds want to know.

Some Minds don't even care.

Other Minds are mildly interested.

Only 15 years ago, this question would never have come to mind, but it kept springing up floor-after-floor and aisle-after-aisle, much like it does at grocery lines we visit each day (with the cheap tabloid celebrating photographs that really are questionable). If it's visually appealing, does it really matter what it is as long as the message - or display -- is visually arresting? Isn't that the Magic of Art? To make a person stop and look; inquire and comment. Perhaps later to write about the Piece. For the collector to stop; look and then shell out money for an Objet d'Art that can't be taken with you, but the Art will last forever.

As Walt Fydryck, a Chicago based Artist says: "Don't touch The Art. Let The Art touch you."

Understandably, it probably does not really matter how the End Affect is arrived upon. The ever-lasting Effect is what lasts. That First Impression will influence and delight. However, for the Struggling Artist with Talent (where the 'with' is emphasized) who has not gotten his/her Break yet, the Current Marketplace is ttoally gutted, saturated and flooded with 'Wanna-Be' Artists who can afford a PhotoShop Program and have the intellect to 'figure it out.' However, they are not Natural Artists who are lacking in the Flair Category.

AUTOMACY vs. ARTISTRY:

Clyde Hampton (an Artist for 30 years now) laments: "You're not an Artist even if you can afford a pricey Photoshop Program." Clyde's other Gripe is:

"Just because you (meaning an Art Dealer or Gallery) can afford a booth at ARTropolis (or any other trade fair), doesn't mean you undersatnd and promote the 'Best Art.' Will that Art be around 100 years from now or longer?"

These are Good Points, Clyde, that can be used for a lively debate, although I know most people will not readjust their stand.

This Convenience provided by P-shop leads (some) Photoshop Users to believe they can create ART with a few points and clicks, not brush strokes and rubbings. Artists who do have the sparkle and pizzazz to employ PC Graphic Techniques in with their own Medium(s) of Choice can further develop their Talent at a much more rapid pace. But again, the Quadrant of Bottom Lines remain:

1. Who's the Audience?
2. Who'll write about the Art?
3. Who will buy the Art?
4. Will the Art as an individualized Entity or Title pass the Test of Time?

Oh well, in a Society where homes are in foreclosure, does it really matter how the Art is created as long as The Work(s) sell(s)?

The Question then arises:

Why should PhotoShopmanship suddenly gain such wide Appeal?

That Answer is simple. There's plenty of capitol backed by premium marketing tactics while the present focus happens to be on that particular art, genre and/or topic.

TO CONTINUE with the Question:

Why should PhotoShopmanship suddenly gain such wide Appeal?

It's not that we who are boldly Art-centric shun the Introduction of New Art Mediums. The more the merrier. Keeping an Open Mind allows a person to grow as The Art evolves in its own platform dependent on what is produced to advance it across Inter-Cultural Divides.

Today as Reality TV proves, even a 'Flash in the Pan' gets its Day.

ETA: Estimated Time of Arrival:
Entertainment is what Art ultimately provides, as Dance, Theatre and Song. The merrier an element is, the more inductively exciting and inspiring Experiences can become. But, what a No-Talent conceives as Art only pollutes and destroys the Chance of Real Art (which is in the Eye of the Beholder from getting to The Top.

"How can real Art rise to the top when it's suffocated out? Mr. Hampton asks.

Strict Observations concerning Art run rampant at ARTropolis. What's appealing is as individualized as ever. Having the Ability to see so much at one time under one roof, in one precise area derived from all observation points (cultural, regional and artistic) across the Planet is an absolute Treat.

SUMMARY: Airbrushing and Photoshop: Pseudo Art Impersonators. If Cave Man had access to them, imagine how marketing Art would be vastly different. Sometimes it's better to just leave well enough alone and move on to the next Booth...

ARTropolis: Best of Show 2008 goes to PAUL VILLINSKI - Metamorphosis

Art is definitely judged by one's valued opinion, as it's been doing that since Cave Man painted the first bison on a limestone wall so many eons ago. Art in itself is universal. Acceptance is not. That's why it's always interesting to check out new Art when it's produced as it is an Indicator of the Time, for the Times and stands the Test of Time.

After attending ARTropolis' Premier Opening on April 24, 2008, I can say that Art has reached a new Level of Beauty and Concern with the Arrival of New York based Artist:

PAUL VILLINSKI

whose Piece: Metamorphosis

is as complex as it is far reaching. Paul creates Butterflies out of Tin. Tin Cans. 1000s of Butterflies are mounted (pin-pointed, we could say) on a white wall, fluttering about and stopping people as they pass through the aisles. There's nothing like them anywhere, although TCA: Tin Can Art has been 'around' and is now becoming Haute Art because of its Pliability.

Paul then paints the Tin on some of his Butterflies. He crafts the Butterflies in all their rich intricate detail meticulously out of Tin, which is rather pliable, but it can prove to be a Challenge as his hands bore.

While I chatted with Paul, he proudly showed me the Earth Day Issue of the New York Times Magazine (from Mid-April) in which his Butterflies had their Spread. The NYT Editors could not have picked a better Artist to represent, especially since the USA is covered in a thin film of tin filth. If more people (altho most do not have The Vision and Talent that PV possesses) recycled the way he does, Earth Day would be all the more successful.

"Astounding. Seeing is believing!" Because the Product is the Tin Can, Paul is not only creating Art, he is recycling. With all the Soda and Beer Drinkers in New York, Paul definitely has his work cut out for him. After all, to reparaphrase Bob Dylan's Hit:

'Everybody must get canned.'

ARTropolis in Chicago: Day #1: April 24, 2008. Hit the Floor running with PAUL KLEIN.

As I had said to my Associate, Paul Klein, former Art Gallery Owner and now publisher/editor of:

ARTLETTER - http://artletter.com/

"Aren't U glad we're electronic, digital and computerized these days - otherwise, we wouldn't even be able to get 1/2 of ARTropolis done?"

That Comment, of course, generated the Idea that (unfortunately) many People will not be able to physically 'walk the Show'; see the fabulous Interpretations + Renditions or even 'physically be in town' for the Event(s). However, they can checkout the official ARTropolis Website at:

http://www.merchandisemart.com/artropolis/
http://www.mmart.com/artropolis/

Although 1/2 The Fun is being there to absorb every Sight, Sound and Sensation that arises (which is an ART in and of itself), ART transcends (all on its own) and with the Aid of Modern Technology, you can be at The Shows without any pain, but all gain.

Furthermore to expand your Dimensions on 'The Arts,' you can subscribe to Paul's eNewsletter in order to keep up with all Artistic Break-Throughs & Thoughts by sending him a Note at:
