“Several Short Sentences About Writing” by Verlyn Klinkenborg. "My far, the BEST BOOK ON WRITING yet."

ASK/Chicago: I have not penned and posted a book review since July but had to stop and mention this book because it deserves to be read by anybody who is either a Reader or a Writer or an Author.  It’s called:

“Several Short Sentences About Writing”

purchasable online at:

http://www.amazon.com/Several-Short-Sentences-About-Writing/dp/0307266346

by Mr. Verlyn Klinkenborg – who happens to get very detailed about what makes Writing as special as it is.  I was not familiar with him, I must confess but now am a new Fan.  While at the Evanston Public Library, I saw his book.  I had some time to kill and it just captured my attention.  One of its sentences on Page 8 asks:

“How long is a good idea?”

Have you ever been asked this before?  Have you ever thought of this before?  I’m now 60 and have been writing for the last 55 years and that never occurred to me.   I’m sitting here wondering why that was so. This book should be a standard in any writing class for any person who is in love with words and creative expression and how they got that way and how they can be improved.

Dedicated as he is:  Mr. Klinkenborg’s  Acknowledgement Page states:  “My greatest debt is to my students over the past 30 years.  They’ve taught me far more than I’ve ever managed to teach them, and they’ve made teaching writing one of the great joys in my life.”

So glad I was meandering around.  So glad I was on the 2ND floor.  So glad I spotted:  “Several short sentences about writing.” Some things just take time.  Writing is one of those.  Reading about it and why that’s so is now much easier due to:  “Several Short Sentences About Writing” ©2012 (as published by Alfred A. Knopf).

You’ll be, too!

Mort Crim 's Take on my August Holidates circa 1996. An Eventological Blast from The Past!

I found a terrific Interview Mort Crim had written about my HOLIDATES so long ago, that I felt compelled to share it with you all today.  What follows is his brief bio and the article with its Code # starting out the piece.  Circa 1996 when I was formulating

Eventology
The Art of Event-Making
Adrienne Sioux Koopersmith's Campaigns for Humanity (C)1990

by only 6 years.

BIO:  Mort Crim is an author and former broadcast journalist. Crim was born July 31, 1935. Crim retired from anchoring TV newscasts at WDIV-TV Detroit in 1996. He also anchored at WHAS-TV in Louisville, KYW-TV in Philadelphia and WBBM-TV in Chicago.

K69-AC38 -  365 Day Holiday

This is Mort Crim with Second Thoughts…brought to you by Big Kmart.

How did you spend your Intl Ping Pong Day?

It was August 2ND, in case you missed it.

How about August 9TH?

Do anything special for National Handholding Day?

There are lots of Holidays in august, you’ve probably never heard of.

On Adrienne Sioux Koopersmith’s calendar, there are 36 of them.

And the self-proclaimed ‘Eventologist’ created them all.

Like National Coward’s Day on August 13.

And my personal favorite:  Stale Food Day on August 31.

Now, when I first read about Koopersmith and her holiday declarations, I was skeptical to say the least.

Here was a woman trying to get us to celebrate anything, no matter how trivial or silly.

It seemed like she was just making up reasons to proclaim a holiday.

It thought the greeting card companies had a monopoly on that.

But then I thought about it again.

Making each day a cause for celebration.

And on second thought, it seemed like a pretty good project.

Finding something new to celebrate every single day of the year.

We don’t need greeting cards for that.

we don’t even need to celebrate the same things.

But just give it a try.

I’ll be back with today’s final thought…after this…

Today’s Thought:

Every day is a holiday for those who know how to celebrate the joyful, painful, quirky diversity of life itself.

For Big Kmart…I’m Mort Crim.

ASK on Productivity. Take it from THE ANT, they have SWAG!

ASK ON PRODUCTIVITY:   Productivity is only a moment away.  That’s all it takes to write, compose, pen or pencil in an idea that can launch a project, something breath-taking and suitable for what you are feeling at this particular point in your life-to-date.  How often we fall off track and don’t allow ourselves to do this every  single day, especially so if we happen to label ourselves as an Artist or a Creatif (creative personality) that is launching a Passion that comes straight from our heart and gut.  Sometimes, it’s just hard or difficult to do this, but once into the Groove and ‘The Zone of Productivity,’ that special something pops forth like Spring eternal.  That’s why it’s commonplace and necessary to now blow your own horn.  Via all the social networks that we have at our disposal and fingertips, it’s quite easy to do.  The effectiveness of Productivity increases on its own accord.  Sometimes, it just does not seem to happen fast enough. It’s been that way for a time. It’s stagnating, NOT SWAGnating (we could say).  What can be done to shore it up?

After all, we’re all living in a get quick fast society and social system. It’s been that way for a spell, but if that Artistic Slant of yours is given enough time to incubate and cultivate, then there is no telling what can start as a grassroots movement and then move up the ranks and files of what generally is defined as Popular Culture.

And for those who are extremely original in nature – and strut to the beat of a different drummer, that’s quite  do-able, too, as there are audiences spell-bound for every style and SWAG there is.  One of my newest Buddies, BSON has SWAG – it’s his very own:  Style With AG-enda (ie: SWAG) which is what I call it as he definitely has a plan and plans his days very well in his Production Work(outs) in order to get his Project to fruition.  It takes guts as well as charisma to launch something new; besides the time, space and drive to make sure it is properly set into motion.

And where do these Ideas that are driven by Productivity come from?  For me, it’s Nature.  That’s how I started the 7-part SKiN™ Series (7 books and 7 movie scripts of which 4 are completed as of Sept., 2012) by looking out back into my backyard; trampling around the great Out-of-Doors, bicycling through piles of leaves and realizing there’s life beneath my feet. One of the coolest Creatures by far is THE ANT.  Inspired back in 2009, iN THE COMPANY OF ANTS ©2009 became one of my leading Markers to Productivity as the Spec Movie Script beat out 3,164 others in the Hollywood contest known as Scriptapalooza.

Hopefully, after the right amount of Production has been filtered into the Storyline, ‘iN THE COMPANY OF ANTS ©2009 will seize the attention (that’s ANT-ention) of an ANTimation Company because after all, we are all iN THE COMPANY OF ANTS.

Symbolic of whatever your Art is, producing every Day sets that Dream into Motion, hopefully with a happily ever after on your horizon, soon.

The Best Log Line ever for the Best Undiscovered ANT Movie Script yet…

Back in July of 2010, the third Movie Script I ever penned called:

iN THE COMPANY OF ANTS ©2009

beat out 3,164 other scripts in Mark Andrushko’s International Screenplay Competition called Scriptapalooza which has picked Winners because Mark’s team is comprised of Hollywood producers, managers and those who know what it takes to make a great movie greater.

Needless to say, I was beyond the Joy Level when this happened.  Since, it’s been divided into 2 stories and 2 movies, but still is not COMPLETELY to my liking; however, what I do like is the LOGLINE.  Seems only right that ANTS should have a LOG LINE since they are busy parading and marching up and down and across and through the grounds that do contain logs of many sizes.  Even to an ANT, a TWIG is a LOG and these lines express the essence (ess-ANTS) of this Movie best by stating:

ANTS:  Born to bug.

Born to picnic.

Born to invade.

Born to endure.

NOW:  Born 130,000,000 years ago to set a Prime Example in KOOPERSMITH’s iN THE COMPANY OF ANTS ©2009-2010.  After all, look about you.  We are all iN THE COMPANY OF ANTS.  Watch where you step.

NOTE:  The Term ‘charactANTS ®’ is derived from the Two (2) Words:

CHARACTERS + ANTS = charactANTS ®

(collectively defined as the 31 major Actors of
iN THE COMPANY OF ANTS ©2009-2010.

EXPLANATION OF
AWASA (ART With A Smile Attached):
I’m here to introduce the Concept of AWASA™ Engagements to you.
Hi there!  I’m ASK: ADRiENNE SiOUX KOOPERSMiTH and am a Creative Writer who loves TOYS that lives in Chicago.  One of my favorite TOYS is GORF.  That’s FROG back-words who is Part and Parcel of my TOY Collection.  For years, as KEEPER OF THE FROG, GORF,  I have paraded and pranced around Chicago taking Photographs (that I call PHOTOGORFS) of THE FROG and wherever We go, People instantly stop, smile and speak (to us).  Smiling is FUN.  I love to smile.  I love to laugh. Smiling and Laughing are contagious, in the best of ways.  I love to see others smile and laugh.  Sometimes in our World, there’s not too much to smile and laugh about, but each Day is truly a Blessing.  Also, as a Creative Writer, I’m a profound Believer in the Difference a Day can and does make.  To emphasize this Feeling and Sentiment, back on Wednesday, July 25, 1990 at 9:45 PM, I launched a new Literary Genre called:
EVENTOLOGY
THE ART OF EVENT-MAKING
ADRIENNE SIOUX KOOPERSMITH’s CAMPAIGNS FOR HUMANITY ©1990
and since then, I have created 1,900 HOLIDATES (falling into 34 precise Categories) that are defined as  Goodwill, Humanitarian, Altruistic, Educational, Recreational, Spiritual, FUN-Time and/or FUN-Type EVENTS; therefore, EVENTOLOGY was born.  Now, I am extending the HOLIDATE Phenomenon to you via this:  AWASA Greeting with the Aid & Assistance of:

GORF, nicknamed ‘THE GRiN REAPER’ who lives in CHICAGORF, Illinois USA and is hailed as ‘CHICAGO’S FIRST GREEN MASCOT.’  AWASA (ART With A Smile Attached) Greetings is an Off-Shoot of my Creative Writings that fully utilizes EVENTOLOGY.

To further explain:

EVENTOLOGY’s PURPOSE is to:
Put ‘The Pop’ into Pop Culture, one Day at a Time!
And this time, that Day is all yours!
HOW IT’s CREATED: You tell me 3 things about yourself; or provide 3 topics you like; furnish your Name or Nickname (if you wish); your Birthdate; your Child/Children's Name(s); Pet’s or Pets' Name(s); Spouse's/Significant Others' Name; your favorite Food, Quote, Sport, Memory, Past-Time, Book, Travel Destination and/or anything that rocks your World is a GO here.

I will also require your email; full street mailing address and PayPal Payment to proceed with and  process this all-original HOLIDATE.

This is all naturally GORF approved, you know.   By including your Birthdate, this Proclamation becomes ‘official’ and voila, your own EVENTOLOGICAL HOLIDATE is declared in return.  Consider this HOLIDATE as your very own personalized GORF-O-GRAM.  All it needs is a Frame!  As a personalized Greeting (customized especially for you), this unique Gift is as ‘Pretty as a Picture’ and now that PHOTOGORF (Photograph) is all yours!  Its Dimensions are 8.5 X 11.  It is an Original. The One and Only: like YOU!

This ART Form is what I have termed as:  A PHOTOON (derived from the 2 Terms:  PHOTO + carTOON).  It’s a Photo that doubles as an animate-able cARToon combined with your very own HOLIDATE created by me who is known in the Media as ‘America’s Premier Eventologist’ and ‘The Premier Eventologist in The History of The World.’  1,900 HOLIDATES grace ‘my EVENTOLOGICAL Calendar and Roster’ and I’m here, ready, able and willing to customize one especially for YOU, guaranteed to make YOU smile and laugh (over and over again) via THE GRiN REAPER, GORF.

By the way, the Information you provide will be kept strictly CONFIDENTIAL, not resold and used only in the Creation of your Personalized GORF-O-GRAM.

When you need to take that LEAP OF FAITH and turn what’s GRiM into what’s worth GRiNning about, turn to GORF as he’ll make you SMiLE-out-loud.   AWASA (ART With A Smile Attached):  That’s what I call it.

But, let's back up for a Moment here and 'ask' the following that you may be wondering about:
Why does GORF think he can declare a Special Day for you?

That Answer is simple and prehistoric in Nature.  As a Species, FROGS (classified as Amphibians) have lived on the Planet Earth for 217,000,000 years.  That’s a packet of some 79,205,000,000 Days (not counting Leap Year Days that hold a special Meaning in the Heart, Soul and Legs of all FROGS), much longer than Man has.  Seeing all the EVENTS that transpired during these Eons of Time has THE FROG FAMILY inscribed as ‘Sworn Survivors’ and allows them that distinct Privilege, one that needs no other Reason why.

MY CLOSING THOUGHTS ARE:  And, wouldn’t YOU agree with me that when YOU see this TOY, YOU immediately smile?  From every Angle and Dangle, even hanging from this Sapling Tree located at the Museum Triangle Campus near Chicago's Lakefront, I snapped this Image of GORF with my $3.50 throwaway camera on Saturday, March 11, 2006.  Linking Creativity to Inspiration + pursuing your Passion need not be an expensive Endeavor.  It’s the burning Desire to ‘set that Fire’ is what counts.  That’s what this Page (called AWASA: ART With A Smile Attached Greetings) is all about.
Your Customized  HOLIDATE with the PHOTOGORF will be ready and emailed to you within Three (3) Working Days in order for me to fully concentrate on and 'capture' your Essence and Special Interests.  Please feel free to scan this 'Gift and Greeting' and use it on your various Social Networks, if you so desire.
